individual voices (2015)
Recently I have written a series of pieces that are concerned in one way or another with the presentation of unique, and yet similar, events or objects. In this work each instrument or voice has its own unique path. There are 36 duo combinations between the alto flute, trumpet, trombone, vibraphone, electric guitar, voice, violin, viola and double bass. Essentially the piece is a chord that gets added to throughout, eventually with the voices of many people. This is intended to reflect the idea of understanding and compassion – things that the Arts help to promote in society.
individual voices was co-commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and the Royal Philharmonic Society. The first performance was given by the London Sinfonietta with Juliet Fraser (voice) and Ian Vine (electric guitar and electronics) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, 9 May 2015.
